A series of question regarding using VBAP, etc.
Pardon my inexperience with these issues:-)
Using spat5.pan with VBAP/VBIP, do I need to specify the speaker configuration from the start? Or is it possible (or even worthwhile to encode the output into 5th order HOA somehow? The reason would be to create a “master file” in 5th HOA… But I might be completely confusing how VBAP and ambisonics interact, if at all…

Hum… This is a little confusing.
VBAP and Ambisonics (a.k.a. HOA) are two completely different things. They dont “interact”.
With VBAP (and with most panning algorithm), you need to specify the speaker configuration.
With Ambisonics, the production workflow consists in 1) encoding the sound scene (spat5.hoa.encoder~), and 2) decoding it (spat5.hoa.decoder~).
The speaker configuration needs to be specified only at the decoding stage.
