Hi everyone: I’d like to create a UHJ stereo file in Spat, combining 22 mono sources. Is there a UHJ encoding object in Spat? If not, is passing through the bformat panning (as in the spat.decoder~ help files) the best approach? I am not sure I have the signal path correct (see attached screenshot) and would appreciate any expert advice… Many thanks – Christopher
Hi Christopher,
There is no UHJ encoding in Spat.
A workaround is indeed to first encode to bformat and then convert bformat to UHJ.
To that purpose, your signal path is correct.
I would however strongly encourage not to use UHJ, as this is not well tested and this usually sounds very bad (nasty phasing effects).
Why not using a standard stereo panning ?

Thanks – This for a CD release, so I’m looking for the best stereo mixdown that preserves some sense of spatialization. The original piece is in a six-channel ring. Any advice? To my ears, the UHJ sounds great, but I’ll compare to a stereo-panned version next…
Well, if UHJ suits your needs, it’s great.
It was just a warning message.
Not many other choices for CD stereo mixdown:
- transaural which may also suffer from strong coloration artifacts and small sweet-spot
- you could try out the stereo-downmix option of spat.transpan~.
This combines conventional amplitude panning and transaural, and tries to minimize the detuning of the latter.

Hi Ctrapani
if you want to encode in UJH or Ambisonics or other stuff try :
http://idmil.org/pub/software/omprisma/MultiPlayer1.0.dmg
It’s really powerful !!!
to comment this, MultiPlayer “decodes” UHJ and Ambisonics.
Cheers,
