SKataRT v1.7 released

Release Notes for SKataRT v1.7 07.03.2025

This release is dedicated to Jean Lochard who left us much too early and who played a crucial role in developing SKataRT by his enthousiasm and by inspiring many useful features.

  • add envelope follower that applies the level from live input audio to the output audio, independent of the control mode.
  • add sharpness control for more snappiness to envelope follower
  • add “Duration” to descriptor choices, add “off” for color/size
  • allow shorter Attack/Release envelope times of 1ms
  • allow to change Beat mode “Sync” time value without retrigger
  • fixed a potential problem when using SKataRT outside the demo project
  • add mubu version check to detect if an outdated mubu is used for the device (will open warning dialog)
  • add pipo version check to detect if outdated pipo modules are loaded (will print an error in the Max window)
  • update spat5.pan~ to be compatible with Live 12 and AppleSilicon

Jean nous a quitté, Diemo ?

oui, hélas, fin octobre.

Hi Diemo. It was nice to meet you at the Forum this year.
Some report: This version of SkataRT 1.7 doesn’t work on my Max 9.0.5 (I am on Sonoma- M3 chip).
Same thing with Mubu version 1.10.13 (latest), create tons of problems with catart-mubu, so I had to restore MUBU version 1.10.12 and now everything is working fine (both on Max 8 and Max 9.0.5).
Still SkataRT 1.7 is not working at all for me if I drag the amxd instrument into my patch. Analysis is done nicely, visualized properly, but no sound.
From the console I read the following:

.
This is what you see in my Max 9 documents: in the Max for Live Device you find the SkataRT project folder, and I assigned in the preferences the path to the SkataRT for Max directory (where you have the amxd device and the projects.).

No idea what is all about, but it would be great to use SkataRT inside Max (I do not use Ableton Live). Please let me know ! All the best to you.
Federico

Hi Federico, thanks for trying skatart 1.7! The first error line shows that the current mubu finds an old pipo.descr.mxo somewhere. Live can be a bitch, disseminating devices’ externals that you have loaded in the past everywhere, which can then be picked up by standalone Max. Here are some places to look for (see this post SkataRT doesnt make any sound - #23 by schwarz):

  • ~/Documents/Max 9/Max for Live Devices/SKataRT Project/
  • ~/Library/Application Support/Cycling '74/Max 9/Settings/temp64-Max/mxt and temp64-live/mxt

All the best!

Hi Diemo,
thanks for your kind answer.
I just wanted to be sure about how to set up the proper path for the SkataRT instrument, this is why I decided to share the screen of my dir.
Second I use now MUBU 1.10.12 (not the latest, I just want to be sure that all the patches I did in the past are working smoothly.
I will try to find those old things. the question is: How do I recognize them?

Many thanks !

Federico

I did what you suggested.
No way. The demo inside the SkataRT Folder works fine. If I try to to create a new device from scratch in my session of Max, still burst of audio and then nothing. I even try to save the project inside the SkataRT folder buth nothing. Here from the console:

I suspect is MUBU version 1.10.13 ( I had same problems using MUBU-CataRT package), so I had to go back to 1.10.12 (now working).
Solutions?

We’re getting closer, thanks! Can you please be more specific about which combinations of mubu version and which patches show which behaviour?

Hi Diemo,
Thanks for your kind answer.
MUBU 1.10.12 works fine with CataRT-Mubu
on Max 9.0.5.

MUBU 1.10.13 doesn’t work with CataRT-Mubu.

SkataRT 1.7 doesn’t work at all.
Only the project files.
If I create a new project with in Max9 using SkataRT 1.7 it doesn’t produce any sound.

Let me know

We’re making progress!

For the record: this is with skatart used in Max via amxd~, where the demo project works, but not a fresh instance. It seems that the voice is not really activated on init, although the points are there. Try to activate it (the button between the voice name and the solo button).

Highly interesting. Is it catart from the PM or from github (via the forum project)?

There seem to be several layers to this issue. It might be the Trigger Chance dial that shows its initial value of 100%, but doesn’t seem to get sent on if the device is loaded into amxd~. Opening as patch and within Live it seems fine.

Try to wiggle Chance, it might play.

Hi Diemo,

You where right. The Chance Param was indeed not initialized. So I moved and boom, it worked.
But, there is a problem. In the sound output there is a constant clicking sound in the background. I changed all the possible envelopes and attack and releases but no luck.
There is always this annoying ticking expecially on longer slices.
Of course using the same corpora on Mubu-cataRtT is not present. I did try the device on Ableton (by a friend) and this problem was absent. So it is a Max only issue with SkataRT.

What next ?

Many thanks!

FP

For the Trigger Chance dial, if you do a device snapshot, it should get loaded automatically, and then the Trigger Chance param will be set at patch load.

For the clicks, you can slightly increase or decrease the duration.

Hi Federico, I found the init bug for Max (weird ordering between initial values, loadbangs, and parameter enabled numbers in subpatches) and uploaded v1.7.1, please try it!

Hi Diemo,

I tried the MaxforLive SkataRT on another machine with Sequoia using both Max 8 and Max 9 same glitches.
The Project in Live 11 crashes the application.

I attach two videos.

here are the videos.
We tried all possible combinations and configurations both on Max8 and Max 9.0.5, Ableton Live 11 on Sonoma and Sequoia, M2 and M3 machines.
I think it would be lovely to have a Max patcher with all the features of the axmd device like what you done some yearsago with the full CataRT sandalone application.
There are a loto of musicans, sound designers, and composers who do not work inside Ableton Live and who enjoyed the original CataRT patcher a lot.
catart-0.9.9

Here the link on swissTransfer of the two videos I recorded:

Please let me know as soon as you can.
cheers

Federico

Hi Federico, thanks for the videos!

These sound like what I hear every two years, then I try to debug and it’s gone. Try to reduce the duration slightly. And I’m sure you kept an eye on the CPU meter to verify overload.

Argh I tried the Live11-specific project, but on the Intel Mac where I still had Live 11.
Can this be the depencies thing (old mubu is found first)? Can you send the full crash log, please?

Great idea, one of the catart-mubu main patches catart-mubu-simple or catart-mubu-poly could be such a ready-to use patch, but adaptable/integrateable into your composition environment. Please start a thread over at catart-mubu to collect suggestions for what would need to be done.

Dear Diemo we find a way out.
Opening the the amxd device, we edited the imubu inside (corpus editor) and we flagged : cursor follows mouse with cursor tool (cursor section inside the inspector).
So now you do not have to click in order to generate the x-y position (like you do in the cata-mubu version).
I’ll send you a quick video.
So now it is working.
I am about to test it with a wacom tablet as well. More about it soon.
