HOA decoding settings

Hello,

I’m trying to decode a 3rd order HOA stream with an octophonic set up on spat 4.8 (I have Spat5 and can make it work on this, but my plugins for the rest of the patch don’t work on 64-bit yet so I have to go back to 4.8).

I believe I can do this just using spat.oper and spat.spat (without using the decoder module), with a 7-channel HOA stream decoded to 8 speakers, however I cannot get output from spat.spat~. The patch copied below.

I can’t work out where the problem lies. I’d appreciate any advice about what I’m doing wrong.

Sorry for the late reply.

I understand the issue with upgrading to 64-bit. Nonetheless, I recommend that you upgrade to the latest spat v4 available (namely v4.9.3, which is compatible with both 32 and 64-bit).

Testing your patch with 4.8.0, I have no sound, indeed. (I dont know why, but obviously this version had some bugs)
With 4.9.3, your patch seems to work correctly.

Also, if you are trying to decode a 3rd order HOA stream (already encoded via some other means), you should use spat.decoder~.
In your patch, spat.spat~ is configured so that it performs both encoding (synthesis) and decoding; I’m not sure if that’s what you wanted…
(and you cannot use spat.spat~ only for decoding)

Are you saying I shouldn’t use spat.spat to perform both encoding and decoding (even if it works ok on v4.9.3)?

I have a working patch with v5 using a decoder (see copied below), but if I try to remake this in v4, I can’t seem to distinguish between outputs and loudspeakers as possible with v5, and therefore I have to use 7 loudspeakers for 3rd order, even though I want to visualise the 8 speakers with spat.oper.

I realise it’s not so fun talking about older versions but I’d be grateful for any thoughts on best ways to structure the patch in v4 for 3rd order decoding to 8 loudspeakers.
