Connecting Pro Tools to Spat and get audio back

Hi everyone! I hope my question will hide my noob side, but i was wonder if there’s a way to send audio from pro tools to Spat in Max, manipulate it and at the same time being able to hear in pro tools what’s going on, in order to record/save the manipulated signal.

Hi Andrea,

Basically three options :

  • use physical wires with your hardware audio device(s), and connect the outputs of Protools to Max
  • if you have RME Audio hardware device, you can use the so-called “loopback” feature, which allows to loopback outputs to inputs, and therefore connect one software tool to another.
    This is very efficient and stable (with only 1 sample delay latency).
  • use a so-called virtual audio driver (software only solution). For instance : JACK Audio Connection Kit (http: //www.jackaudio.org), Soundflower (https://cycling74.com/soundflower), Loopback (https://www. rogueamoeba.com/loopback), BlackHole (https://github.com/ExistentialAudio/BlackHole).
    Note that the compatibility depends on your OS (mac or windows) and OS version (in particular, many of these tools dont work anymore on macOS catalina).
