rhythm using granular synthesis

I would like to be able to use granulation on audio file (and then on live instruments, real time audio processing) and to control precisely the result by introducing rhythmic patterns.
The rhythmic patterns could be:

  1. played at a certain tempo
  2. looped so that they apply to the entire length of the sound file (or the instrument musical gesture)
  3. speeded up or down (with automation?)

How can I implement a precise and flexible rhythm control to a granular synthesis module?
