pedcoeff, piano, and gamma messages

Hi Arshia,

I’m trying to use antescofo~ for the piano piece I’m currently working on. Having studied the help patch and tutorials, I have some messages that I would like your clarification.

Please explain how “pedalcoeff,” “piano,” and “gamma” messages work, and their respective min/max ranges.

Among them, “piano” message does not appear in the help patch nor tutorials, but we know that it exists as it is listed in the pdf documentation and the object’s states shown in Max window when “info” is given. I’m wondering if it might optimize the following for piano when turned on (piano 1).

Thank you,

Yota,

Sorry for delay in my response (vacation time!).

Before I get into details:

  • Make sure you are using the very latest version on Forumnet as things have become more robust for Piano since version 0.8 . If you doubt about the version you are using, just send a “version” message to the Antescofo object and watch the Max/Pd window.
  • Make sure you have atleast the following analysis parameters: [analysis 4096 512]. You can check this by sending [info] to the object and watching the console.
  • The “piano” message is to be ignored! It is only for our internal experiments.

The gamma message

The gamma message has to do with Calibration. It makes Antescofo more sensitive to dynamic ranges in the input signal. We only use it on typical ppp passages in a score. The default value is -1.0. If you want to make it more sensitive, you can go lower (for example -2.0). You’ll note that the calibration signal (watch it in the Calibration Patcher in Max) will jump more rapidly upwards with slightest signal. Also, read the text in Calibration patcher for more details.

pedal and pedalcoeff messages

The pedal option in Antescofo is still experimental but is used in extreme cases. Note that starting from version 0.8, you will not be needing this unless you are dealing with a musical passage with heavy sustain pedal retained for a very long time and repeated notes! If that’s the case, you can turn it on and use the pedalcoeff message to control its behavior. Pedalcoeff is always between 0.0 and 1.0 . It gives the degree to which you want to enforce current spectrum (and remove past resonance). Putting it high (e.g. 0.9) will force Antescofo to focus on novelties in the spectrum. Use this with care!

Note that many problems encountered recently on Piano are due to bad score transcription… .

If you are having problems with your piano passages, you can send the audio + antescofo score to us for a test.
