Modalys 3.8.1 "release candidate" #3

Hi!

The latest beta release Modalys 3.8.1 rc3 is available from a google drive location.
rc3 means that we are very, very, very (…) close to official release!!

This Mac & Windows build includes:

  • Modalys for Max
    • crash in luafunction message fixed.
    • mlys.lua/dynamic controller: value parameter was ignored (set to zero) if the dimension parameter was specified.
  • mlys.lua: several parameter inconsistencies (objects, controllers…) have been fixed.
    • rect-plate object was messed up previous builds (lua context)
    • pitch parameter for objects: more graceful handling in lua context.
    • New examples: ‘tube, reed, and holes’, ‘controller_set_value’ etc.
    • revamped Extras Menu Modalys item with updated examples.
    • setcentspitchbend & setspectraldiffraction:
      • messages can now be passed with a controller name (rather than a fixed value)
      • now available in Lua as ‘set_cents_pitchbend’ & ‘set_spectral_diffraction’ (object, value/controller).
      • now work with tri-hybrid objects.
    • apply_envelope (Lua): 1) more flexible syntax 2) more graceful handling of multidimensional controllers.
    • changing mode shapes through setinfo did not have any hearable effect!
    • set_value (Lua) was broken in b3.
    • mlys controllers: the target-attribute parameter had been accidentally missing for a while…
    • reed connection (through mlys.lua): tube and reed accesses were reversed! (also in the documentation…)
    • sound output fix (was strange in b1…)
    • more precision in applyenvelope message (target value).
    • [setinfo value] message can now be applied to a multidimensional controller.
    • mlys.lua: more robust handling of external editor (especially on Windows!)
    • mlys.lua: set_value function now works with array for multimensional controllers, with time and rank optional parameters.
  • Documentation
    • Ongoing update
    • Tube and reed accesses were in wrong positions in Reed Connection.

Cool, thank you for the retrieval of the @target-attribute :slightly_smiling_face:
It works!
Would be fine that the tube, reed, and holes example can be accessed by the Extras menu as the other 3D examples.
More testing in the next days and I will give you some feedback!

The “setspectraldiffraction” and the “setcentspitchbend” messages don’t work for tri-hybrids…while they work normally for hybrids…

Yes of course I can expose the ‘tube, reed, and holes’ example a bit more. The Modalys Extra menu item needs some reorganization anyway, you’re right! I’ll do it in the scope of 3.8.1.

Regarding setspectraldiffraction and setcentspitchbend messages, I does ring me a bell that it was not quite implemented for tri-hybrids… I’ll open a bug issue and will work on it (although not very probably for 3.8.1…)
NB: these messages should work from within Lua, too, which is not the case at the moment.

This is actually the “normal” behavior. It has been known that access positions should not be set to object’s extremities, because, as you pointed out, it “breaks” the synthesis (with no error message, by the way…) Of course this is no graceful behavior of Modalys…

So why has it seemed to work for quite a while? Because I revamped the linear smoothing (the time parameter in the Max message) when I introduced the applyenvelope method, and then a small issue was introduced, unnoticed until very recently (3.8.0.b3): target value was not quite reached at the end of the time ramp, so for example MonoString@access-in-2-position 0. 0.02 would result in a value near to 0. but not quite 0.! (0.0002 for instance) and MonoString@access-in-2-position 1. 0.02 would be .9998 or so. So for access positions this bug created a natural clip!..
I fixed this in b3 and now we have expected exact target values, hence the behavior for accesses…
You can check that the synthesis breakdown is here in any previous version, by removing the time parameter in your message.

Of course I will investigate this antediluvian bug regarding accesses, but it is safe to keep clipping access positions for now.

Hi Robert,
just some little bugs:

  1. in the Modalys for Max examples: the “Membrane with variable pitch” from the menu opens a “Non linear string variable brightness” and vice-versa, you should invert the recalling item from the menu
  2. The feedback loop example opens a patch with a mlys.expression. If you double click on the expression Max crashes (this was like that since some sub versions).
  3. Is it normal that the multiple points example patch is not thought to excitate in some way the resonator?
    I will test the rest in the next days
