Issue when processing Pencil stroke (harmonic) treatments

Hello,

I have a 3 weird behavior with pencil stroke treatments :

1/ when I select 2 or more parts of a sound with harmonic pencil stroke, the pencil stroke treatment are concatenated (on the treatment track) while I’d like to keep each selection unique in case I want to remove or modified them one by one later.

I found a workaround which is to move the playhead and then go on with a 2nd, 3rd selection etc… (NB : in this case SVP play is Ok)

2/ the other (major) problem is, when exporting/processing my work, the gaps between 2 pencil stroke selections are also filtered/processed. In fact, it seems that each individual Pencil Stroke treatments is stretched to the following one. The result is totally weird with a kind of tunnel effect applying to the entire audio file (no unprocessed gaps).

NB : I used default process treatments settings.

3/ the problem 2/ also applies when saving treatments so that I totally lose my selection work after reloading a project. Visually the selection seems Ok on the sonogram, but not when listening to the sound : same output as the export + the pencil stroke track concatenated.

I don’t know if I am clear enough in the description of this problem. I will try to illustrate it with screen captures.

Thank you

EDIT : add 2 screen captures (1 : original file + edits / 2 : processed file)

Hello,

Thanks for your report and for the snapshots !

About your behaviour 1), yes i believe it is probably a historical choice that have been made to concatenate following pencil filters drawn, probably because some people wanted to group and manipulate. So if a pencil filter is already selected before you draw the other (wich is usually the case if you draw several filters), AudioSculpt will automatically add it to a “pencil filter group”.

As a possible solution, i think we could remove this auto-group and add a the possibility to group multiple pencil filters that you select on the different Tracks. So we’ll try to add this option for the next release.

Concerning 2) we will investigate about this strange stretching applied between two consecutive pencils, but this is bug for sure

Concerning 3) i will also investigate also the SDIF export of the pencils. Currently it seems also that AudioSculpt create groups so you may loose your individual regions. That should be improved (along witth 1)) to really support pencil filter group wich does not seem to be really taken into account in the export.

Would it be possible for you to send me the exported Treatment file (.trt) that you have exported already ?

Thanks a lot in advance,

Best

Charles

Hello Charles,

Thank you for your answers.

I’m happy you were able to reproduce the problem and that you will investigate to sort it out.

To export the audio result, I found a workaround by playing back audio in realtime (SVP playhead) through Soundflower and record into Audacity. But this doesn’t do the trick at all time.Sometimes, certainly after some handling in audiosculpt I didn’t identify yet, even SVP playback is faulty.

I attached two .trt files.

Best regards,

Jerome

Hi Jerome,

Sorry i cannot find your TRT files, did you forget to attach them ?

Ok that’s not really a problem since i was able to reproduce the bug.

So it should be fixed for the next release. I hope completely, but seems fine after few tests mixing overlapping and non-overlapping groups of pencil filters.

However if you can upload (again) your TRT files i would be great so i can test on your specific case.

Best,

Charles

Charles,

I didn’t forget the files. I tried to upload/attach them to my post but they don’t appear.

I am not very familiar to IRCAM Forumnet. Is there a way to send you the files via PM ?

Best regards,

Jerome

Another attempt to attach .trt files…

EDIT : doesn’t work

Hi Jerome,

I warned the forumnet people that you cannot upload the TRT files. I should have soon a way to exchange privately with you.

Either cases, the new corrected version of AudioSculpt should be available very soon on the Forum.

Sorry for the delay

Best,

Charles

Jerome,

Did you try to upload your files zipped ?

That should work normally if you “zip” all your TRT files and upload them on forumnet

Best,

Charles

Hi Charles,

Good suggestion, I try this.

Best regards,

Jerome

Pencil_stroke_trt.zip (38.6 KB)

Hi Jerome,

The new version of AudioSculpt 3.1.8 is now available wich should solve your issues.

It should now play properly your pencil filters sequences.

Also the importation should not aggregate anymore the different pencil filters in a global layer.

Best,

Charles

Hello Charles,

I tried quickly with the .trt I sent you and it seems to work fine (didn’t try new treatements files yet).

So thank you very much for this new version and bugfixes.

Kind regards,

Jerome
