Installation of Fluidsynth

Hi,

I’m currently following the Introduction to OpenMusic course online, and I’m trying to install Fluidsynth ahead of the sessions on spectral techniques.

I have installed it, but OM doesn’t seem to recognise it - in Listener it seems to talk about MIDI ports; does this sound like an obvious issue?

I’ve gone into Preferences and so on, installing according to the course guidebook, but I’m not getting any audio output.

Thanks for any help you can give,

All the best,

Philip Singleton

Dear Philip,

What OS are you using?

Hi Karim,

It’s the most recent Sonoma - I gather that it doesn’t always get on with OM?

Philip

Sonoma gets pretty well No worry.

I think your issue is very simple:
If you have in the listener a pack of warnings concerning MIDI ports, this means your editor you are playing is still playing thru midi and not Fluidsynth. So here we go:

  1. In order to change the editor’s player you need to click on the hp icon (marked red) and choose OM Fluidsynth player

  2. Now In order to make this happen to ALL editors, you need to check under the MIDI tab in OM’s preferences the ‘Force score player’ like here:

Please also make sure you choose fluidsynth as ‘Default score Player’

Then you will have all score ediotrs set to fluidsynth:

Please tell me i f this works for you.

Hi,

I’ve followed these steps, and Fluidsynth is now the default player. Listener tells me that it’s playing, but I hear nothing.

I’ve tested my speakers, and other sounds are working fine (system alerts, music etc).

I’m sure it’s an obvious problem, but I can’t see what it is…

All the best,

Phil

Hi Phil,

First please do check in the Om preferences under fluidsynth tab if the synth(s) are loaded.

Try reload them, and then click on Autoload Synths (check) then apply preferences.
Try if it plays. If not, just quit OM and restart it. This should do the trick.

Please let me know if you have some sound.

I’ve done all of this, but there’s still no sound.

When I restarted OM the synth was ‘unloaded’ again, even though ‘Autoload’ was checked.

I’ve tried through headphones and speakers, to no avail.

Philip

There seem to be some problems indeed.
I have sound but then not. I am looking it over and get back to you ASAP

Thank you for your help - I’ll look forward to hearing from you.

All the best,

Philip

By the way did you restart your computer after installing fluid from homebrew?

Dear Phil,

Please try this version of OM:

(Download following your processor)

An please do report back. I think it is fixed in this development version.

Yes, I realised that I had to do that. I’ve just done so again, with no luck.

The preferences seem fine, and Fluidsynth is staying as the default player, but just isn’t autoloading each time.,

Philip

Thank you - I just saw this new reply.

I’ll try this out later on, and report back.

Thank you once again for your help.

All the best,

Philip

Hi Karim,

I’ve downloaded the right version of 7.4 for my Mac (thank you) but I’m afraid it’s still not working. If that changes I’ll let you know here, but for now there’s no audio output.

Thanks,

Philip

Can you send me the preferences.lisp file in your workspace?
This can give us a clue.
