Fluidsynth recognition in OM 7.6

Hello Everyone,

My first posting here after visiting for years. I have OM 7.6 (Mac OS Sequoia) and have installed Fluidsynth using Homebrew. This confirmed when I try to install it again:

Yet in OM 7.6, it says it isn’t installed:

What am I missing? I have restarted and specified fluidsynth in the “midi” tab in OM. I apologize if this topic is redundant but I didn’t find a solution to this exact problem. Many thanks for your help!

Best wishes,
Steven

did you restart your computer?

Thank you for the quick response Karim! Yes, I have restarted twice.

Dear Steven,

Did it work?
If no, did you re-install fluidsynth?
It could be also an issue with homebrew path. Where or how did you install homebrew?
Is it on your main HD?

Best
K

No luck after restarting twice. I had installed Homebrew via a command I found somewhere, not your instructions.

I have now reinstalled Homebrew and Fluidsyth in the terminal following your instructions on the OM page “FLUIDSYNTH AND OM” (I can’t include a link in this reply; …openmusic/doc/fluid.html)

I have also restarted. I don’t have any externals connected, everything is on my main HD. I have also tried a new workspace… still the same result: “No Fluidsynth installed on this computer!”

Best wishes,
Steven

Can you just test this:

  1. Open a terminal
  2. type: fluidsynth

what do you have as output?

Aha! There is an error:

Ok,

No worry about this error. Howmbrew Just doesn’t install a default soundfont. It’s ok
But this means you have a working fluidsynth installed.
It may be that your sh environment is not correctly set.

What does this command give you in the terminal:

  1. cd
  2. less .zprofile

In a new terminal widow, I get this:

Ok this seems right although you have a duplicate in the last line but i don’t think it is an issue.

So sorry for that, another question:
where did you install OM?

I dragged the OM app into the Applications folder on the main HD.

Yes that’s what you are supposed to do.
Very weird.
Can you try with the beta version here (you can still keep the 7.6 version along):

And start by creating a new workspace

That works! Thank you!

I’m still not getting sound from the sound object, though. I’ve selected “fluidsynth” in the player mode. (I’ve checked volume, sound output, etc…)

Great to know…
But you still have to configure some things in the preferences in the midi tab
Please see here:

Under ‘Setting up Preferences’

And yo migth also nees an .sf2 (soundfont) available on your hd

I think I’ve done this correctly:

:

But I see now the .sf2 path isn’t correct.

I thought the sf2 file was installed with Fluidsynth? I will try to find where I can get the merlin.sf2 file.

For anyone wondering, the soundfont is here: openmusic/OPENMUSIC/resources/online/in-files/merlin.sf2 at master · openmusic-project/openmusic · GitHub

I got it working finally! Thank you Karim so much for your help! Can I buy you a (virtual) coffee somewhere?

Yes unfortunately, this is a sort of bug unfortunately.
But once you have set the path, it will work.
