Ascograph: Unexpected '

Antescofo seems to work better than ever in version 0.8-580. And Ascograph is a very helpful tool especially when creating a score. Unfortunately, version 0.132 which comes with the distribution, reports an unexpected ‘<’ when opening a MusicXML file through “Open score”. Has import of MusicXML files been dropped or moved somewhere else?

@KYL: Not only the MusicXML import has not been dropped, it has actually been integrated in the AscoGraph! Send us the XML file and we will have a quick look.

It seems that AscoGraph doesn’t recognize the XML format, expecting Antescofo Score syntax, when reading a MusicXML file selected with “Open score” in the “File” menu, see the screenshot. In the previous version, I opened XML files this way (and I don’t know any other), relying on AscoGraph to automatically distinguish between Antescofo Score and MusicXML formats. As AscoGraph complains the first character in the file (and ‘<’ obviously is illegal to begin an Antescofo score with), it doesn’t seem that the problem is due to malformed syntax in a specific XML instance file. But of course I can send you my XML file (produced by Finale, a program which I like much less than Antescofo, by the way), if you still think that it could help.

@kyl: This means that the drag-n-drop procedure is not working well in the AscoGraph version that you have!

Could you please replace the Ascograph.app bundle on your disk with the one in this link, retry and let me know? I am suspecting that I have distributed a ‘bad’ version!!!

Yes, version 0.134d works fine. The window with the file info which opens on import is also a very practical addition. There’s only a strange overlay of text in the editor window which reports a parsing error although the XML has been converted to Antescofo Score format successfully. By the way, is it possible to configure the appearance of the editor window? Midnight style looks nice but isn’t ergonomically ideal for me.

OK! This means that I included a faulty version of AscoGraph in the current distribution! Sorry about that… We are ready to release v0.9 and this will be inside.

For your comments regarding AscoGraph, I leave @@rvirmoors to reply (i.e. Grig Burloiu who is the guy behind the great new design). Any comments to improve this would be welcome in the next coming weeks… .

Hi @kyl, I confirm that we’re working on several improvements to the AscoGraph editor, including the feature to change color schemes.

I’ll appreciate that, thank you.

Only vaguely related to the topic: While working on my Antescofo score, it came to my mind that a difference editor could be of great help, for example to integrate changes after a revision. I guess that I’m not the only composer who works like that often. What do you think of a such a feature?

Kai,

You can ofcourse use other editors! One of Antescofo’s favourite editors these days is SUBLIME TEXT EDITOR. If you want to use, it @juliablondeau has developped Antescofo Language Modules for Sublime that enables syntax coloring. You can download and install the Sublime Antescofo Language Module from this post (link).

There is also a EMACS mode for Antescofo, if anyone here is a fan of EMACS, made by @pierre which you can obtain here (link).

Note that if you use external editors, the latest Antescofo Max object has an Auto Watch feature that is by default ON (see inspector). Meaning that if you load a score, and edit it in ANY text editor outside and save it, it’ll automatically RELOAD that score. You can ofcourse turn the AUTO WATCH off in the object’s Inspector.

We should extend this FILE WATCH system this year. Stay tuned.

Thank you for the hints. Of course, you’re right, it doesn’t make much sense to “reverse engineer” all capabilities of other editors, less when you can use some of them along with AscoGraph. What is great with AscoGraph is the visualisation.

I already noticed the Auto Watch feature: It brings more comfort to the creative process. Currently I use TextWrangler as text editor; being familiar with Emacs is some years away. Maybe I should give Sublime a try…

There is also a TextWrangler / BBEDIT module that you can download here (link) but it’s rather old now!

I believe that our best bet in the future is to bring the current text editor to an “acceptable” level and focus our effort on the visualization and visual-editing of the scores. Grig Burloiu (@rvirmoors) has been putting a lot of UIX effort on this and I’m sure a lot of users will like his ideas of temporal data visualizations in the upcoming release(s) of AscoGraph…
