Adding instruments to Microplayer

Hello,

I’m trying to add more soundfonts to Microplayer 2.0, for orchestral playback from Open Music, but I have so far not managed to do it.

I added these two lines to the coll as a test:

GM, FluidR3_GM.SF2;

Steinway, Steinway_Grand_Piano_1.2.SF2;

It seems my changes are deleted the next time the app is opened. I put the soundfonts in the Microplayer folder, and even inside the bm-microton.app (Contents/MacOS/). I manage to load names into the menus, but the sounds themselves won’t load, see screendump attached. Looks like Microplayer expects a folder instead of a soundfont file.

It is a challenge to choose program and bank within soundfonts that are not just one single sound (like general midi or organ soundfonts).

Midishare has general midi sounds, but as far as I can see, it is limited to 16 channels. With eight-tones that leaves only 3 possible options (1-4, 5-8, 13-16, 9-12 is useless because of the percussion track).

I know how to use fluidsynth with MaxMsp, but I’m not sure how it could be communicating with Open Music, the two available options from OM are Midishare and Microplayer. Would it be possible to build further from the microplayer as a max-patch, and is it available as a patch?

If Open Music had a “to Max” option, it could be possible to figure out how Open Music routes microtones and channels, and make a patch.

Hello,

Did you try to rename your extensions in lowercase (.SF2 might not be recognized as soundfont) ?

If it does not solve the problem, can you send a screenshot of the files contained in /MacOS/… ?

Benoit

Hi,

Thank you!

Renaming to .sf2 solved the problem. I could not save the coll from Microplayer, but with a text editor it’s fine. That leaves only the challenge choosing program number (in cases where there are more than one within the soundfont).

Hello,

Do you have any idea if “bm-microtone” (Microplayer)… takes in consideration the analysis of the string resonances, by sympathy?

I am trying to find a piano sound as natural as possible.

I’ll be thankful if you have any idea of the program content of this application or cold give me any tip of another application that might take this in consideration.

Cheers,

Monica Gil

Hello,

It plays from samples, so if you have the sounds you want to use, you can create your own soundfont (I use polyphontics for mac) and add it to microplayer. The sounds needs to be at bank 0 program 0 for Microplayer to read it (with some patching it could be possible to change this). It worked fine for me. I made my own interface to fluidsynth here: http://www.bek.no/~ruben/Research/Downloads/software.html I cannot use this with Open Music though.

Best,

Ruben

Hello,

For information, instead of making soundfonts, you can also create a folder containing the samples of your instruments (as explained in the documentation). The application will automatically interpolate missing pitches.

Concerning piano resonances, I have an updated version of bm.microton that integrates it (ie adding resonances to any instrument) , but I can not distribute it because I would need some time from Ircam to make it compatible with the old (current) version and I’m waiting an answer from Ircam.

The algorithm I used for adding resonances comes from a Michael Levinas piece called “Rebonds”. The patch was initially made by Tom Mays. May be you can also contact him.

Best,

Benoit Meudic

I do not know Max well. Could you specify

“I added these two lines to the coll as a test:
GM, FluidR3_GM.SF2;
Steinway, Steinway_Grand_Piano_1.2.SF2;”

  • Where did you add these two lines?
  • How to add other sounds? Can you use all 128 standard MIDI sounds?

Thanks
