About fractal chords

Hi all

I am working on analyzing Tristan Murail’s work Serendib recently. There is one concept call “fractal chords” mentioned in his note. Could anyone tell me how i can get the information about “fractal chords”? Thanks!

Hi there

There has been a calculation puzzled me for quite a long time. In spectral music, the distortion method can be used for stretching or compressing harmonic series by change one or two partials’ frequency. After increased or decreased the partials frequency, the whole harmonic series will be arranged by the new proportion(this mentioned by Tristan Murail in his article). I would really like to know how comes the new proportion? I will appreciate anyone who can give me the explanation in detail. Thanks for the reading.

Greetings,

Have you looked at Rozalie Hirs’s analysis of Serendib ? See pp. 119-132, Contemporary Compositional Techniques And OpenMusic, ed. Hirs & Gilmore. Much attention is given to the fractal bases of the piece.

Best,

dp

Hi DavePhillips:

Thank you for your reply. I did looked at one article “Frequency-based compositional techniques in the music of Tristan Murail” by Rozalie Hirs. The fractal proportion of composition structure is mentioned in this article but not the fractal chords. Amazon has Contemporary Compositional Techniques And OpenMusic but it will take a couple weeks to ship to China. Do you have any ideas where can i buy the book? Thanks again!

Hi Foresun,

The article you’ve already read is the same one I referred to. However, the book is certainly worth buying, it includes an interview with Tristan Murail and a lengthy analysis of Le Lac. I ordered mine from Delatour, it took about three weeks to reach me in the USA. It’s worth the wait.

Best regards,

Dave Phillips

Hi Dave Phillips:

Thanks for the respond again. I am going to buy this book anyway. Can’t wait to read it. It’s good to talk to you!

Best regards!
